1. Know where your main water shut off valve is
In an emergency water leak situation, shutting off the water to your home could save you
big time in both damage prevention to your home and your water bill. Waiting for help to
arrive before shutting it off could mean thousands of gallons pouring out into your home
causing untold damage and an exorbitant water bill.
2. Change your shower head
If your home is older and the shower heads haven’t been replaced recently, you may have an outdated version that allows more water to flow through it than newer models. That doesn’t mean you’re getting a better shower, it just means you’re going through more water than necessary. Regulations changed from 5 gallons per minute to 2.5 gallons per minute for shower heads back in 1992. If you haven’t upgraded since then it’s well past time. With today’s ultra flow shower head options, you won’t be sacrificing anything but extra charges on your water bill.
3. Winterize pipes
When you winterize your pipes, you’re helping to ensure they last through the cold weather without cracks or bursts that cause water damage and repair costs. For a small investment, you’ll be saving yourself the headache and the expense of a flooding situation.
4. Upgrade your appliances
Newer appliances such as water heaters and washing machines are built to be more energy efficient which saves you money on your bill. Buying appliances with a decent warranty will also save you money in repair costs should something unexpected go wrong with them.
5. Always use a licensed plumber
When it comes to the repair or installation of your plumbing, you want to always be sure your plumber is licensed and bonded. Work done correctly by a licensed and bonded plumber can save you money, time, and frustration. Trusting a backyard plumber to save money initially could end up costing you a lot more in work done to repair what was installed incorrectly.
